The National Pig Improvement Program
The National Pig Improvement Program (NPIP) has been providing a service to the Australian pig industry since 1995. In 2001, responsibility for the running and future development of the program has passed from the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries to the Animal Genetics and Breeding Unit (AGBU).
Support for the development of the NPIP came from Australian Pork Limited (APL). The genetic evaluations for the NPIP are performed using the PIGBLUP computer program, in order that both NPIP and PIGBLUP clients can benefit from the joint development of these systems.
We wish to take this opportunity to acknowledge the foresight of QDPI in establishing the NPIP, and the effort and commitment of Michael Macbeth in successfully establishing this program.
